The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that parents schedule their child’s first orthodontic visit by age 7. It’s around this time that their little smiles have a mix of baby and permanent teeth, and because their jaws are still developing, it’s important to monitor how adult teeth come in.
Without growth monitoring, crowding and other potential problems may make orthodontic treatment more challenging later in life.
What is Orthodontic Growth Monitoring?
As your little one grows, your Space City Orthodontics doctor team can help watch for orthodontic issues before they become more serious, making the work of orthodontics in their later years a lot easier. For example, we’ll monitor:
- Potential cross-bite and open bite development
- Obstructive breathing issues—is your child a mouth breather?
- Position of baby and permanent teeth
- Dental overcrowding or spacing which could hinder or affect permanent tooth development or position
- How permanent teeth come in
- Teeth at risk for injury or decay due to protrusion or overcrowding
- Harmful habits that may cause orthodontic problems (thumb sucking)
- Oral hygiene and overall dental health
- A balanced facial appearance

I took my daughter to True Image for braces when she was 11 years and 8 months old. They told us that the only way to correct her overbite was with surgery, which was something we really didn’t want to pursue.We then came to Space City Orthodontics, where Dr. Bhagia recommended the MARA appliance instead. While it was a bit expensive and took some time to get used to, it turned out to be the best decision we could have made.Within a year, my daughter’s overbite was completely corrected, and her jaw is now properly aligned—without surgery. We are so grateful to Dr. Bhagia and the entire team for their expertise, honesty, and excellent care. I came in to make an appointment, but they happened to have a spot open for me to be seen. Everyone (especially Vilma) was very sweet and friendly. I would highly recommend this place if you need an orthodontist.Updated 7/15/26: I had an appointment that to remove my Invisalign attachments (yay, I'm done!). Unfortunately I double booked and had another doctor's appointment right after this appointment, so I was worried about time constraints.But Laura and Dr. Elias were super understanding and patient with me. Laura was actually super quick and got me out in less than 30 minutes so I could make it to my appointment in time. Thank you!Also, very happy with my teeth 😁

What is Early Orthodontic Treatment?
Although early orthodontic treatment — also called Phase I treatment — isn’t included with our free growth monitoring program, it may prevent or intercept more serious problems from developing and may make treatment at a later age shorter and less complicated.
In some cases, the Nowlin Orthodontics team will be able to achieve results that may not be possible once the face and jaws have finished growing. Early treatment can give us the chance to:
- Align jaw growth
- Lower the risk of trauma to protruded front teeth
- Correct harmful oral habits
- Improve appearance and self-esteem
- Avoid extractions of permanent teeth
- Correct teeth that meet in an abnormal way or don’t meet at all

How Does Orthodontic Treatment Work?
Orthodontic therapies at Space City Orthodontics will begin with a private consultation with Dr. Bhagia. He will inspect your teeth, review your treatment objectives, and create impressions of your teeth. Then Dr. Bhagia will go over the possible care opportunities and which one will best meet your needs. Once your treatment plan is crafted, Dr. Bhagia will plan your appointment to obtain your braces. If you have decided to go with clear aligners, the impressions are utilized to build your initial set of trays. Dr. Bhagia will arrange routine follow-up evaluations to check your journey and make alterations.
