Types of Retainers
Clear Retainers
For most of our patients, a clear retainer is a perfect solution once they’re out of braces or at the end of their Invisalign® aligner treatment. Clear retainers are thin, transparent “trays” designed to fit directly on your teeth, so they resemble an Invisalign aligner. Not only are clear retainers inexpensive and convenient, but they’re also essentially invisible, making them a popular choice among both our teen and adult orthodontic patients. If you’re prescribed a clear retainer, don’t forget to brush it every time you take it out of your mouth and before putting it back in.
Bonded Retainers
Bonded retainers, also called fixed retainers, are usually used for patients who have a high risk of tooth regression. We make these retainers from a single metal wire that we cement directly to your teeth, and it usually runs across the back of your teeth to stay inconspicuous.
Fixed retainers are convenient and highly effective because they stay in all the time. However, it does take a little practice with a floss threader to properly perform oral hygiene. If your bonded retainer ever does start to come loose, simply contact our office to schedule a repair appointment.
Bonded retainers will always require the use of clear retainers too, as they only hold the front 4-6 teeth. Not everyone is a candidate for a bonded retainer, so count on us to help advise you of your options.

Having a special needs kid who requires braces was a bit challenging. Our son had an extra tooth when he was born . We tried so many dentist and orthodontics that promised us they could assist , however that part alone was also challenging. We did not feel comfortable placing him asleep . After visiting Space City , we just knew we were in great hands . Our son is on the spectrum so he too was very brave . He’s now 11 after only seven months his teeth are almost corrected . Going to space city orthodontics has been such a wonderful experience, every time! The whole staff is so kind and caring, my son gets nervous each time he has to go in for his braces but they are so great with him and are patient with him, which I really appreciate. Absolutely wonderful everything here. Really. Doctors are reassuring and comforting. Staff is welcoming, and pleasant to be around. A lot of newer equipment to make an uncomfortable process more tolerable, and easy to understand. Dr. Bhagia is an astounding physician who remains very passionate about the work he and his team are performing. One of his beliefs that I admire the most is the thought process that perfectly good teeth should not need to be extracted to “make more space”. (Please ask staff/Dr’s for more understanding if there are any questions in regards to that). Honestly, I could get lost in explaining why I appreciate, and adore this team interpersonally and clincally such as air way and sleep apnea evals and treatments, the advanced braces process itself with the different options available, the technology used along the way, etc. I’ll spare everyone and won’t do that. Lol
I, myself, have been in dentistry for 13 years specializing in other types of care, and over the years I’ve seen a lot. My experiences have encouraged me to maintain very high levels of expectations about doctors, offices, and care of patients. Yes, they know what kind of work I do, and no, I do not get “special treatment” compared to other patients. All patients are treated with the same quality and respect as much as the next person. I applaud Space City Ortho for creating, and maintaining such an environment. It’s refreshing to see Dr. Bhagia and Dr. Kamal being visible (not hidden away in an office), and actually interacting with patients and family members when able.
Oh! And love love love that I, and grown ass woman, can grab an ice cream sandwich on the way out the door! 😍 Us adults love treats too!!
(Yes, those of us in dentistry love food and snacks too! We have nothing against food! — Just clean and floss your teeth to keep them healthy when you’re done. ☺️)
